Did you guys catch the hint for the Golden Egg level in the Superbowl ad for the new movie Rio? You can check out all the details here.
It’s an interesting new advertising avenue for in a Web 2.0 world. Angry Birds has been a juggernaut and they capitalized on it by keeping the buzz going. The game, almost a year old now, could easily have stagnated and cast aside in the same bin where previous Apps end up, but in the biggest media event of the year they found a way to continue the conversation with what amounted to a 1 second easter egg in a movie trailer. Really neat trick.
They get to jump in on the Super Bowl advertising blitz without actually taking out an ad. It’s a meta-advertising gimmick that could be put to some interesting uses for smaller or more niche brands in the future. One could easily see a deal or coupon site piggy-backing (ha!) on a computer screen in a laptop commercial, for instance.
It is a great way, even in a non-Superbowl context, for commercials to avoid the DVR curse. The movie studios made sure that all the avid Angry Birds players out there watched the Rio trailer multiple times. A well-executed concept all around.
